Web of documents versus web of data

In this MIT video Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the world-wide-web, talks about the radical shift (change) that is taking place as we move from a web of documents to a web of data. He suggests that this change will allow us to solve problems that we have not been able to solve before as everyone can access data and analyze it using their unique perspective.

EveryScape!
Here is another very interesting site (EveryScape) that takes photographs and creates worlds that you can explore. The first location that you can explore is Union Square... take it out for a text drive and let me know what you think? I think it has huge implications for education as you can place comments and educational content within this virtual world.
If this peaks your interest... check out the previous post on Photosynth.

RSS Feeds - Why? and How?
Here is a short YouTube video that explains why RSS feeds are important and how you can start leveraging the power of "pull" based information. To me learning how to use RSS feeders to build up a network of interesting and relevant information (frequently updated information) is extremely important to continuous learning.

DATA is gold in Web2.0

Here are two more Web 2.0 applications that are using voice-recognition to convert both video and audio feeds to text and then use those data sets to optimize search. As I mentioned in a previous post (Biometric voice payments), I believe that voice-to-data applications of this type will explode as companies attempt to control the data that makes them so very powerful. Remember applications have quickly become commodities, while data has become gold.

Biometric voice payments
Voice Pay allows shoppers to purchase items using biometric voice authentication while shopping in stores, while watching TV or reading the newspaper, or online. I believe that we will see an explosion of applications that use voice datasets for a variety of innovative solutions. As voice datasets grow and voice recognition technology improves companies will be able to deliver content to those that are looking for it, based on what they say.

Plastic that acts like human skin.
Nano technologies such as polymers that are self healing could improve everything. It is interesting to think of innovative products that could be made from plastics that regenerate as they are used. To learn more, read the interesting MIT Technology Review article "Plastic that heals itself."

PowerPoint - Terror
When people think about PowerPoint presentations they often think of endless slides of bullets, crazy flying words, and annoying sound effects. The thought of attending another presentation (based on PowerPoint) often sends people running and screaming. This terrorizing effect was well documented in Atkinson's Beyond Bullet Points and in the following comical short Don McMillan.

Google's street views
Google's street views is another new application that is very interesting and at times disturbing. They say that you can find pictures of people all over the cities that are covered (San Francisco, New York, Las Vegas, and yes Denver) doing all sorts of less than savory things. You can watch this quick video to learn how to use street views in Google.

Simply incredible! How metadata is being used to leverage the social space and relate pictures in Flickr. When you start to think about how this may be used in becomes overwhelming. I can think of numerous applications in education, training, travel...
